If you married in Poland and are now divorcing in the UK, your Polish marriage certificate has to be in English before your case can move. UK courts and solicitors cannot read a document written in Polish. You need a certified English translation that is signed, dated, and complete.

This guide covers which Polish marriage document your solicitor needs, why Polish names cause so many problems, what the translation must include, how long it takes, what it costs, whether you need notarisation, and what to do if a translation is turned down.

The Step-by-Step Process for Getting Your Polish Marriage Document Certified in English

Getting your Polish marriage certificate translated is simple. Here is how it works.

Step 1 — Scan or photograph your Polish marriage certificate

Take a clear scan or photo. Make sure all four corners show, every word can be read, and nothing is cut off. Turn the page over and send the back too, as stamps and notes are often printed there. You do not need to post the original. A digital copy is enough for us to work from.

Step 2 — Send it to a UK certified translation agency

Send your scan to an agency that works with legal documents for UK courts and solicitors. Our translations are accepted by UK Family Courts, solicitors, the Home Office, and UKVI. We work with qualified Polish to English translators, and you can upload your file through the form on our site in a couple of minutes. Your document is kept private.

Step 3 — Get your free fixed quote within one hour

We look at your document and send a fixed price, usually within the hour. The quote covers the translation, the certification, and delivery by email. Nothing is added later.

Step 4 — Approve the quote and pay online

When you are happy with the price, you pay by card. Your document then goes to a Polish to English translator who works with civil and legal records every day.

Step 5 — Get your certified translation by email

Your certified Polish marriage certificate translation arrives in your inbox as a PDF. It is signed, dated, and ready for your divorce solicitor or the Family Court. If your solicitor wants a paper copy, we can post one.

Odpis Skrócony vs Odpis Zupełny — Which Polish Marriage Document Does Your Solicitor Need

Poland issues marriage certificates through the USC, the Urząd Stanu Cywilnego, or Civil Registry Office. There are two main types.

Odpis skrócony aktu małżeństwa is the short form. It shows both names, the wedding date, and where the marriage was registered. Most UK divorce cases use this one.

Odpis zupełny aktu małżeństwa is the full form. It shows everything the short form shows, plus anything added later. That includes name changes, corrections, and notes about an earlier divorce.

For a normal UK divorce, the short form is usually fine. Ask for the full form if:

  • You changed your surname after the wedding
  • Either of you was married before
  • The record was corrected or amended at any point
  • Your solicitor has asked for “all entries” or a “full copy”

If you are not sure, the full form covers everything and saves a second trip to the USC.

The Multilingual Polish Certificate Trap — Why It Still Needs Translating

This one catches people out every week, so it is worth reading closely.

Poland also issues an odpis wielojęzyczny, a multilingual extract. It has headings in several languages, including English, and it looks like it has already been translated. Many people send it to their solicitor and assume that is the end of it.

It is not. Here is why:

The headings are multilingual. The content is not. The boxes are labelled in several languages, but the names, the place of marriage, and any handwritten notes are still in Polish. A UK court needs the whole document in English, not just the labels.

It is an extract, not the full record. Multilingual forms leave out annotations and amendments. If anything was added to your marriage record later, it will not appear.

Many UK bodies treat it as incomplete. If your solicitor asks for a certified translation and you hand over a multilingual form instead, expect it to come back.

If you already have a multilingual extract, send it to us anyway. We will tell you whether it will do or whether you need to order a proper odpis from the USC.

How to Get a Polish Marriage Certificate from the USC If You Do Not Have One

Plenty of people start a UK divorce without the certificate in hand, or with a copy that is decades old. You can order a fresh one from Poland without flying back.

Online. If you have a Polish trusted profile, profil zaufany, you can order through obywatel.gov.pl. This is the quickest route for most people.

By post. Write to the USC in the town where you married. Say clearly whether you want the odpis skrócony or the odpis zupełny.

Through a Polish consulate in the UK. London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Belfast can help you request one. This takes longer but works if you have no Polish online account.

Through a relative in Poland. A family member can collect it for you with written permission.

There is a small state fee, and the certificate normally arrives within a few weeks by post. Order it early. Waiting on a document from Poland is one of the most common reasons a UK divorce sits still.

Polish Surnames Change by Gender — The Number One Cause of Court Queries

This is the single biggest reason Polish documents get questioned in UK cases, and almost nobody warns you about it.

Polish surnames change depending on whether the person is male or female. A husband may be Kowalski. His wife is Kowalska. Same family, same name, different ending. The same happens with -ski / -ska, -cki / -cka, and -dzki / -dzka.

So your Polish marriage certificate may say Kowalska, while your UK passport, BRP, or bank records say Kowalski, or the other way round. To a solicitor or a court clerk who does not speak Polish, that looks like two different people.

Polish letters cause the same trouble. Names with ł, ż, ś, ę, ó, ń, ć, ź often lose those marks in UK systems. Wioleta Łaska can end up as Wioleta Laska. Again, the names no longer match.

How we handle it. We translate the name exactly as it appears on the Polish certificate. Where the spelling differs from your UK documents, we add a short translator’s note explaining that both forms refer to the same person, and why. That one line stops the query before it starts.

What you should do. When you send your certificate, tell us how your name is spelled on your UK passport or BRP. It takes you ten seconds and it saves your solicitor a letter.

What Happens When You Submit an Untranslated Polish Marriage Document to a UK Solicitor

UK family law runs entirely in English. A Polish document, even with an official USC stamp, cannot be used as it is. This is not a preference. It is a rule.

When you apply for a divorce in England or Wales, you have to prove the marriage legally happened. Your Polish marriage certificate is that proof. It has to be in English, with a signed statement confirming the translation is true and complete.

Hand in the Polish original on its own and your solicitor will send it back and ask for a certified translation first. That costs you days, sometimes weeks. Sorting the translation before your first solicitor meeting keeps things moving.

A quick note on Scotland and Northern Ireland. The process described here is for England and Wales. Scotland runs its own system through the Sheriff Court, and Northern Ireland has its own rules again. The translation requirement is the same everywhere: it must be in English and properly certified.

Mandatory Details Every Certified Polish to English Marriage Translation Needs for Court Use

Not every translation passes. A certified Polish to English marriage translation must carry all of this on the certification page:

  • A statement that it is a true and accurate translation of the original Polish document
  • The translator’s full name
  • The translator’s contact details and qualifications
  • The date the translation was finished
  • A signature from the translator or from someone authorised at the agency

Every translation we produce includes all of these as standard. You can read more about what makes a translation valid for court in our guide to accurate legal translations for UK court cases, or go straight to our marriage certificate translation services.

Certified Translation or Notarised — Which One Do UK Divorce Proceedings Actually Require

For most UK divorces where the wedding took place in Poland, a certified translation is all you need. You do not need notarisation for a straightforward Family Court divorce in England or Wales. Do not pay for it unless someone has actually asked.

Notarisation only matters in a few cases:

  • A Polish court or authority is involved at the same time
  • The papers are going back to Poland as well as being used here
  • Your solicitor has specifically asked for it in writing

If any of those apply, we can arrange it. See our notarised translation services for how that works. If none of them apply, save your money.

Do You Need an Apostille on a Polish Marriage Certificate

For a UK divorce, no. An apostille is for sending documents the other way, out of the country.

You would need one if you are also filing something in Poland, or if a Polish authority asks to see UK paperwork. In that case the apostille goes on the Polish document from the Polish authorities, or on the UK document from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, depending on which way it is travelling.

Both Poland and the UK are in the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is enough and you do not need full embassy legalisation. Tell us if your case crosses both countries and we will explain what your papers need.

Does the Court Want the Original Polish Certificate as Well

We only need a clear scan to do the translation. Your solicitor or the court is a separate question.

In most Family Court divorces in England and Wales, a certified translation plus a good copy of the Polish original is accepted. Some solicitors like to see the original certificate once, at your first meeting, and then hand it back.

Ask your solicitor before you post anything valuable. If you do need to send an original, send it recorded delivery and keep a scan for yourself.

One more thing worth checking. Some UK bodies want a certificate issued within the last six or twelve months. A Family Court usually does not mind how old it is, as long as it is a genuine USC copy. If your solicitor asks for a recent one, order a fresh odpis from the USC before you pay for the translation.

Old, Handwritten, or Amended Polish Marriage Certificates — Can They Still Be Translated

Yes. Polish certificates issued before the 1990s are often handwritten, or have handwriting mixed in with printed text. Many also carry stamps, corrections, or notes the USC added years after the wedding.

All of it can be translated. Translators who work with Polish civil records read this kind of handwriting all the time. They translate everything, including stamps, side notes, and later amendments.

If part of your certificate is torn, faded, or genuinely impossible to read, tell us when you send it. We will mark those parts clearly, which is the correct and accepted way to handle it, or advise you to order a fresh copy from the USC first.

Turnaround Times for Polish Marriage Document Translation When Your Divorce Has a Deadline

Standard turnaround for a certified Polish marriage certificate translation is 2 to 3 working days. If you have a court date or a solicitor meeting coming up, we can go faster:

  • Express — ready within 24 hours
  • Same-day — for orders placed before 12 noon

Tell us your deadline when you send the document. We will confirm straight away whether it can be done, and we will say so honestly if it cannot.

If you need a paper copy posted to your solicitor, add postal time on top.

Pricing for a Certified Polish to English Marriage Document Translation in the UK

A certified Polish marriage certificate translation starts from £25 per page. Most Polish marriage certificates are one or two pages, so the usual total is between £25 and £60, depending on length and how fast you need it.

Here is what changes the price:

  • Length. The odpis zupełny is longer than the odpis skrócony, so it costs a little more.
  • Speed. Express and same-day cost more than standard.
  • Paper copy. A small postage fee if you want one sent out.

Certification is always included. You get a fixed quote before you pay, and the price in the quote is the price you pay.

Rejected Polish Marriage Certificate Translation — What to Do Next

If a court or solicitor turns down a translation, first ask for the reason in writing. The usual causes are:

  • No certification statement
  • No translator signature or contact details
  • Part of the document missing, often the stamps or the back page
  • Names spelled differently from your other UK documents
  • A multilingual extract sent instead of a proper translation

We will correct any error caused by our own work at no extra cost. We cannot promise how a particular court or solicitor will respond to any document, because that decision is theirs. What we can promise is that if the problem is with our certification or our translation, we put it right free of charge.

If someone else did your translation and it has been rejected, send it to us. We will tell you what is missing and produce a replacement that meets the standard.

Your Polish Marriage Certificate Translation May Be Needed Beyond the Divorce Too

Once the divorce is done, your certified translation still has uses. Keep the PDF safe.

Going back to your maiden name. Banks, the DVLA, and HM Passport Office often want to see the marriage record as well as the divorce order when you change your name back.

Remarrying in the UK. A register office will ask for proof that your last marriage has legally ended. In England and Wales that is the final order, which used to be called the decree absolute. Since April 2022 the wording changed: the conditional order replaced the decree nisi, and the final order replaced the decree absolute. If your earlier divorce happened in Poland instead, that Polish court document will need a certified English translation. See our divorce certificate translation services.

Children’s paperwork. Schools, passport applications for children, and citizenship applications sometimes ask for the marriage record too.

Conclusion

Getting a Polish marriage certificate translated for a UK divorce is not hard, but it does have to be done properly. You need a certified Polish to English translation that is signed, dated, and complete, with a note about your name if the spelling differs from your UK documents.

Two things trip people up most often: sending a multilingual extract and assuming it counts, and not flagging the surname difference. Both are easy to avoid if you know about them, and you now do.

Send us a scan and you will have a fixed quote within the hour, and your certified translation in 2 to 3 working days, or within 24 hours if your case cannot wait. Get your Polish marriage certificate translation sorted before your solicitor asks for it, and your divorce keeps moving.
